Behind the curtain

GeekyCon is a labor of love made possible by the hard work and dedication of an incredibly talented group of professionals and volunteers. The staff works year-round, dreaming and scheming ways to make the GeekyCon experience magical for each and every guest. We have grown from a motley crew of inspired Potterheads into a team of nerds who, when our powers are combined, can pull off some pretty awesome things.

Executive Staff

Co-Founder / Executive Director Melissa Anelli has been reporting on and an active part of the Harry Potter fandom since 2000. A former NYC news reporter, she is the webmistress of The Leaky Cauldron and author of Harry, A History: The true story of a boy wizard, his fans, and life inside the Harry Potter phenomenon, which features a foreword from J.K. Rowling, and was a New York Times bestseller. Melissa served as a creative consultant for the launch of Pottermore and founded GeekyNews. She is proud to serve as the president of the board of directors of the Harry Potter Alliance and on the advisory boards of Uplift and NaNoWriMo. She’s a devourer of books, aficionado of theater, and devotee to the art of creating safe spaces for geeks to fully enjoy the things they love.
Co-Founder / Executive Director Stephanie is Co-Founder and Co-Executive Director of Mischief Management. A recovering attorney, she received her BA in English Literature from UC San Diego, and her JD from University of Southern California.  Besides her passions for Harry Potter and bossing people around, Stephanie loves books, Broadway musicals, travel, and most of all, managing mischief at home in California, where she lives with her husband and her two daughters.

Senior Staff

GeekyCon Lit Co-Director Leigh Bardugo is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of the Grisha Trilogy: Shadow and Bone, Siege and Storm, and Ruin and Rising. She was born in Jerusalem, grew up in Los Angeles, and graduated from Yale University, and has worked in advertising, journalism, and most recently, makeup and special effects. These days, she’s lives and writes in Hollywood where she can occasionally be heard singing with her band. Her new book, Six of Crows, arrives fall 2015.
Operations Director Taekia Blackwell serves as the venerable Operations Director of GeekyCon, ensuring that the bits and bobble, keys and cogs that it takes to run the conference are in place. Taekia grew up with Harry Potter and has yet to fall in love so hard with anything else. No stranger to the power of fandom, Taekia has also held various roles with GeekyCon partner organization, the Harry Potter Alliance. Taekia is currently pursuing her MBA at the Drucker School of Management. In her “spare” time, she watches more TV than is probably healthy and would love nothing more than to discuss the first five seasons of Supernatural” with you.
Creative Director Jordan is a graphic designer and Disney nerd living in Columbus, Ohio where he graduated from Columbus College of Art & Design. When not overseeing the amazing team that crafts the visual design and communications for GeekyCon, and BroadwayCon chances are you’ll find him binge watching “The West Wing”, belting “Let It Go” or hunting down the best grilled cheese in the city. Follow him on Twitter for random thoughts and incessant GeekyCon trolling. He is thrilled that GeekyCon is returning to Orlando this summer and can’t wait to geek out with all of you!
Intern Maureen is an intern. Her responsibilities include copy-editing, mimeographing, making coffee, and renaming wingless insects. That is all you really need to know. Don’t click this link.
Logistics Director Abby is the Logistics Director of GeekyCon. While not working on conference-related mischief, she studies psychology and global health at Duke University. She’ll happily talk your ear off about Duke basketball any day of the week, but she also obsesses over more television shows than she has time to watch. If you’re looking for her, chances are you can find her somewhere in the depths of Tumblr or Instagram.
Executive Assistant Candace Rim has been a proud member of the GeekyCon staff since its inception.  She claims no one Hogwarts house as her own, but admits to being a Hufflepuff at heart who enjoys displaying Ravenclaw blues.  When she is not immersed in GeekyCon planning, she can be found solving mysteries with Scooby Doo and the gang, playing one of her Nancy Drew computer games, or watching The Avengers.
